Edmunds' Roses is a second generation family company started by Fred Edmunds, Jr. in 1949. His father, Fred Edmunds, Sr. was the curator of the Washington Park Rose Test Gardens in Portland, Oregon. After graduating from Cornell University and serving two years in the Army, Fred, Jr. leased 40 acres in Wilsonville and started growing roses. He moved the nursery to its present location in 1961. Over the years he developed a relationship with many of the world's rose hybridizing families and started introducing new roses to the U.S. market through his color catalog. Fred Edmunds, Jr. and his wife and partner in the business, Wini, retired in January of 1992 and sold the company to their son, Phil who had been in the business for 14 years, and Phils' wife, Kathy. Phil handles the production while Kathy manages the office. Fred and Wini are still very active in the business, helping out where needed and keeping in contact with rose lovers around the world.

Both independently and as Chief Rose Hybridizer for the renowned Armstrong Nurseries, I have grown and tested thousands of roses over the years and developed dozens of new rose varieties that smile in gardens around the world - including The White House in Washington, D.C.! Roses are a pleasure to grow - and much easier than many people think! In response to countless requests for advice I have written some easy-to-understand-yet-reasonably-comprehensive rose-care Booklets and developed an inexpensive, Easy-Gardener's Rose-Care Video in association with Golden Eagle Productions. I also wrote all the information on these web pages, featuring many gorgeous Rose Photos. I hope this helps you gain greater personal satisfaction and enjoyment from roses - especially Christensen roses!

The Peace Rose
During World War II, just before the Nazis stormed the airport in Lyons, France, a Frenchman smuggled a few plants of the new rose he had created onto one of the last planes out. It was cared for by an American until the war’s end. This luminous pale yellow rose with a tinge of pink was named "Peace" and became the symbol for the fall of Berlin and the end of the war. The famous "Peace" rose is now celebrating its fiftieth anniversary. (The Rose, by Madison Mallone, Andrews and McMeel, a Universal Press Syndicate Company, Kansas City, MO, pgs. 82-83).

Roses for English Gardens
The Rosarian is happy to present Gertrude Jekyll's classic, Roses for English Gardens. Written with Edward Mawley and originally published in 1902, this work has been enjoyed by generations of gardeners. Rose Prints by Pierre-Joseph Redout?
Pierre-Joseph Redout? was a French artist of the late 18th and early 19th century. The images here were taken from his famous book of prints, Les Roses. Redout? mastered the unusual technique of stipple engraving--the use of tiny dots, rather than lines. This made possible the subtle variations in coloring for which his work is known. We hope you enjoy these prints!
Les Roses
- Species Roses, Part 1
Species roses are the unhybridized, pure-breds of nature. Generally, the flowers are less spectacular than some of the cultivars, but there is a charm to there simplicity. Gertrude Jekyll discusses them in Chapter V of Roses for English Gardens. Some of the examples below are probably cultivars.
Rosa lucida | Rosa bracteata | Rosa berberifolia | Rosa rubrifolia | Rosa moschata | Rosa clinophylla- Species Roses, Part 2
Rosa foetida | Rosa orbessanea | Rosa malmundariensis | Rosa tomentosa |- Rosa gallica, Part 1
Cultivars of Rosa gallica have been gracing gardens for centuries. Gertrude Jekyll refers to them as "Provins Roses." They are also often called French roses.
Rosa gallica aurelianensis | Rosa gallica flore giganteo | Rosa gallica officinalis | Rosa gallica pontiana | Rosa gallica purpuro-violacea magna | Rosa gallica regalis | Rosa gallica veriscolor- Rosa gallica, Part 2
Rosa gallica stapeliaeflora | Rosa gallica flore marmoreo | Rosa gallica Agatha prolifera | Rosa gallica rosea flore simplici | Rosa gallica maheka flore subsimplici | Rosa gallica Agatha incarnata | Rosa gallica gueriniana

Rose History
The first fossil records of the rose date back 35 million years. In 3000 B.C., in what is now Iraq, the Sumerians created the first written record of the rose. Sappho, in her 600 B.C. "Ode to the Rose," referred to this beauty as the queen of flowers, a reference still popular today.
Jumping ahead to the 16th century, colonists brought the rose to North America, making it the longest cultivated European plant in this country. In 1798, Empress Josephine acquired her palace at Malmaison and created the most remarkable rose garden ever planted. It included every variety known at the time (about 250).
"Modern" rose hybrids date back to 1867, and by 1920 hybrid teas dominated the market. They remain the most popular rose variety today. "All-America Rose Selections" formed in 1938 to test new rose varieties to determine which, if any, could be recommended to the public. One of the most popular roses of all time, "Peace," was smuggled to the United States from occupied France in 1945.

Public Gardens
One of the best ways to stop and smell the roses, besides those planted in your garden, is to visit one of the 130 plus AARS-accredited public rose gardens. Like the beautiful Morris Arboretum Rose Garden, each AARS garden blooms with hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of roses.
These gardens showcase AARS' new award-winning roses. Garden visitors can enjoy the winners as they grow and bloom - just look for the metal markers identifying the rose by name and award year.

Fragrance can be one of the most alluring aspects of the rose. The instinctive behavior of most rose lovers when they see a rose is to bring rose and nose near together and inhale. The rewards of this behavior can be tremendous. One can look at faboulous, huge, perfect photos of roses in books or prints, or on line, for seconds, minutes or hours, and none of it compares to finding a good smelling rose.

Kurzbeschreibung
A rose is a rose is a rose, but every rose garden - and every rose gardener - is unique. In Beautiful American Rose Gardens, Mary Tonetti Dorra, author of Beautiful American Vegetable Gardens, captures the special beauty of twenty-four rose gardens devoted exclusively, or nearly exclusively, to America's most beloved flower. Traveling from Maine to the Pacific Northwest, from Florida to California, Dorra not only discovered a variety of rose garden designs, but also a myriad of approaches to cultivation, depending on climate, garden size, location, and, of course, the gardener's favorite roses.
Roses, long considered to be impossible to incorporate into the landscape, here prove themselves to be durable rather than delicate, versatile rather than difficult, and in every case absolutely dazzling in their splendor. Working out the logistics of successive bloom and meeting the challenges of too much heat, too much cold, too much moisture, or too poor soil, each gardener has developed his or her own cultivation plan -- and a selection of their secrets is presented in Growing Tips from the Gardeners.
What is most striking about this celebration of the rose is the shrub's potential variety -- endless combinations of colors, from the purest whites to the brightest reds and oranges; of forms, from tiny Miniatures to towering, tree-engulfing Ramblers; and of uses, from military rows to sinuous free-form borders to startling accents in the middle of the woods. Every featured garden is a gem that will inspire: New England old garden roses, some descended from those the Puritans carried across the Atlantic; a Colefax and Fowler-designed Palm Beach garden; the butterfly-shaped garden at Boone Hall plantation in South Carolina; the French-inspired garden of Maison Chenal in Louisiana; the astounding 350 varieties of roses grown in a garden in Spokane, Washington; and Dolores and Bob Hope's high-profile Hollywood garden.
With more than 250 color illustrations, Beautiful American Rose Gardens offers both intimate views of individual roses as well as bird's-eye views of overall garden designs. Tips from the owners, caretakers, and designers bring to life the fun, challenge, and joy that these gardens inspire. The garden plans and a thorough source list are a great starting point for new garden planners and an excellent reference for veterans. In all, Beautiful American Rose Gardens is an invaluable resource as well as a stunning tribute to America's favorite flower.
