The New Hacker's Dictionary

(E?)(L?) http://www.jargon.8hz.com/jargon_toc.html

A collection of slang terms used by various subcultures of computer hackers. Though some technical material is included for background and flavor, it is not a technical dictionary. What is described here is the language hackers use among themselves for fun, social communication, and technical debate.

The Evolution of the Web - 1990-2012

(E?)(L?) http://evolutionofweb.appspot.com/

The web today is a growing universe of interlinked web pages and web apps, teeming with videos, photos, and interactive content. What the average user doesn't see is the interplay of web technologies and browsers that makes all this possible.

Over time web technologies have evolved to give web developers the ability to create new generations of useful and immersive web experiences. Today's web is a result of the ongoing efforts of an open web community that helps define these web technologies, like HTML5, CSS3 and WebGL and ensure that they're supported in all web browsers.

The color bands in this visualization represent the interaction between web technologies and browsers, which brings to life the many powerful web apps that we use daily.

Browser (W3)

Engl. "Browser" (1400–1450) ist eine Substantivierung des Verbs engl. "browse" = dt. "durchblättern", "schmökern", "sich umsehen", (1523, "feed on buds" = dt. "Knospen knabbern"), das (vermutlich) über altfränk. "*brust", vorgerm. "*brustjan" = dt. "knospen", altsächs. "brustian", altfrz. "brost", "broster", mfrz. "brouster" = dt. "sprießen", "Knospe", "Sproß", Plur. anglofrz. "broz", Sing. anglofrz. "brot" = dt. "Trieb" auf mengl. "browsen" = dt.

Folksonomy (W3)

(E?)(L?) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folksonomy

...
"Folksonomy", a portmanteau word combining "folk" and "taxonomy", refers to the collaborative but unsophisticated way in which information is being categorized on the web. Instead of using a centralized form of classification, users are encouraged to assign freely chosen keywords (called tags) to pieces of information or data, a process known as tagging. Examples of web services that use tagging include those designed to allow users to publish and share photographs, personal libraries, bookmarks, social software generally, and most blog software, which permits authors to assign tags to each entry.

Protocol Dictionary

(E6)(L?) http://www.javvin.com/protocolsuite.html
Network Protocol Suite Directory and Index
Information on all network protocols, including a precise overview of the protocol, a detailed protocol format, related protocols and reference links.

Network communication is defined by network protocols. A network protocol is a formal set of rules, conventions and data structure that governs how computers exchange information over a network. In other words, network protocol is a standard procedure and format that two data communication devices must understand, accept and use to be able to talk to each other.
Network protocols are defined by many standard organizations worldwide and technology vendors over years of technology evolution and developments. In the following directory, we organize the network protocols according to their key functions, or their origin/sponsors - we call it protocol family and protocol suite. One of the most famous network protocol family is "TCP/IP" suite, which is the technical foundation of the Internet.

Netspeak (W3)

Als erste Erwähnung von "Netspeak" findet man "Like all arcane entities, the Internet has its own language, sometimes known as NetSpeak.", von Ian Bacon, "Out on the Internet," MacUser, April 1993. Mein Suche mit Google lieferte jedoch schon Ergebnisse aus dem Jahr 1989 - allerdings wohl als Bezeichnung für ein spezielles Programm oder Verfahren: "Described here is a local reimplementation of "NETtalk", called "NETspeak"."

Podcast, Podcasting, Podvertising, Godcasting (W2)

Named after the ancient "Rosetta stone", which helped decipher hieroglyphics. A non-profit organization that seeks to implement standards for supply-chain (manager-supplier) transactions on the Internet. Created in Winter 1998, the group includes companies like American Express, Microsoft, Netscape, and IBM, and is working to standardize labels for elements like product descriptions, part numbers, pricing data, and inventory status. The group hopes to implement many of its goals through XML, a mark-up language that lets programmers classify information with tags.

About This Site
In the beginning there was no Slashdot. Bored and confused geeks would scribble "First Post" in the sand. Grits were strictly for consumption and there wasn't a place to get nerd oriented news. Then in September of 97 Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda changed all that. With the help of Jeff "Hemos" Bates and others, Slashdot has stumbled forward with the simple mission to provide "News for Nerds. Stuff that Matters".

Today Slashdot is owned by OSTG, but it is still run by many of the same people as it was "Back in the Day". Today we serve millions of pages to hundreds of thousands of readers. But the goal is still the same.

war chalking (W3)

Engl.

Collaboratively creating a hobo-language for free wireless networking.

What is all this about? Well - it was born out of a good lunch, like lots of ideas; where we hit upon the idea of creating a hobo language for wireless access points.

Find a node, and leave a chalk symbol for others to find the node with a minimum of all that tiresome netstumbler business.

(E?)(L?) http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/W/warchalking.html
(E?)(L?) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wardriving

Etymology

"Wardriving" originated from "wardialing", a technique popularized by a character played by Matthew Broderick in the film "WarGames", and named after that film. "Wardialing" in this context refers to the practice of using a computer to dial many phone numbers in the hopes of finding an active modem.

"Warbiking" is essentially the same as "wardriving", but it involves searching for wireless networks while on a moving bicycle or motorcycle. This activity is sometimes facilitated by the mounting of a Wi-Fi capable device on the vehicle itself.

"Warwalking" (sometimes "warjogging") is similar in nature to "wardriving", except that it is done on foot rather than conducted from a moving vehicle. The disadvantages of this approach consist in slower speed of travel (resulting in fewer and more infrequently discovered networks) and the absence of a convenient computing environment. Consequently, handheld devices such as Pocket PCs, which can perform such tasks while one is walking or standing, have predominated in this area. The inclusion of integrated Wi-Fi (rather than a CF or PCMCIA add-in card) in Dell Axim, Compaq iPAQ and Toshiba Pocket PCs beginning in 2002 - and, more recently, an active Nintendo DS and Sony PSP enthusiast community possessing Wi-Fi capabilities on these devices - has expanded the extent of this practice, as have the newer smartphones which also integrate GPS.

"Warrailing" (sometimes "Wartraining") is a simalar in nature to "wardriving", except that it is done on a train rather than conducted from amoving vechicle. The disadvantages of this approach consist in higher speed of travel (resulting in fewer and more infrequently discovered networks).

"Warkitting" is a combination of "wardriving" and "rootkitting". In a "warkitting" attack, a hacker replaces the firmware of an attacked router. This allows them to control all traffic for the victim, and could even permit them to disable SSL by replacing HTML content as it is being downloaded. "Warkitting" was identified by Tsow, Jakobsson, Yang, and Wetzel in 2006. Their discovery indicated that 10% of the wireless routers were susceptible to "WAPjacking" (malicious configuring of the firmware settings, but making no modification on the firmware itself) and 4.4% of wireless router were vulnerable to "WAPkitting" (subverting the router firmware). Their analysis showed that the volume of credential theft possible through "Warkitting" exceeded the estimates of credential theft due to phishing.

(E?)(L?) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WarXing

"WarXing" (Pronounced "Work-sing"), "NetStumbling" or "WILDing" is the activity of detecting publicly accessible computer systems or (wireless) networks. The 'X' may be replaced by a more specific activity to give the following terms:

Webspeak (W3)

There's been a lot of talk about how the Internet is endangering literacy. After spending some time leafing through The Book Lover's Guide to the Internet, you'll think otherwise. This guide for bookworms argues that traditional and digital cultures do mix and provides a list of worthwhile Web and FTP sites and newsgroups. Along with sites devoted to individual authors, the book includes resources for gay, lesbian, and bisexual literature; multicultural literature; poetry; and e-zines. The book's casual tone offsets the wealth of information it contains. For instance, the modem is described as "a little electronic device that allows your computer to communicate with others of its ilk over a telephone line."
