Maßgeblich beteiligt an der Unabhängigkeit der USA war ein Deutscher! Die Amerikaner haben das nicht vergessen und feiern ihren General deshalb jedes Jahr mit der "Steubenparade" auf der New Yorker 5th Avenue.

Zum diesjährigen Independence Day hat das Ancestry.de-Team die Historie des Unabhängigkeitskriegs der USA unter die Lupe genommen und erinnert an einen Mann der in Deutschland heute kaum mehr bekannt ist: Der im September 1730 in Thüringen geborene Sohn eines Hauptmanns, "Friedrich Wilhelm Ludolf Gerhard Augustin von Steuben", hat tatkräftig an der Unabhängigkeit der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika mitgetan. Die von Steuben waren eine traditionsbewusste Soldatenfamilie. Und auch der prominente Patenonkel passt ins martialische Bild der handfesten Sippe: Soldatenkönig Friedrich Wilhelm I. von Preußen.
