Guinea (W3)

"Guinea", of unknown origin; the English form comes via Portuguese "Guiné" from a (presumed) indigenous African name. Or possibly from the Berber meaning "land of the blacks".

Bien que le nom de "Guinée" ait été imposé à cette région par les Européens, on peut néanmoins le considérer comme d'origine africaine, le mot "Guinée" étant, selon certains auteurs la transformation des mots "Ginyia" ou "Gineua" par lequel les marchands maures, avec lesquels les explorateurs portugais furent en rapports, désignaient les royaumes subsahariens dont la ville de "Jenné" ou "Djenné" était alors le centre commercial le plus important.

Une autre étymologie, qui n'est pas nécessairement incompatible avec la précédente, fait dériver le nom du "Guinée", comme celui de l'ancien Ghâna du mot berbère "agane", qui signifierait "brousse".
