von lat. 'terra australis' = 'Südland, südliche Erde'
Australien wurde als letzter Kontinent im 17. Jahrhundert von Europäern entdeckt. Bereits Jahrhunderte zuvor war jedoch vermutet worden daß es einen Kontinent im Süden eine "Terra Australis" geben müßte. Von diesem lateinischen Ausdruck der "Südland" bedeutet wurde der Name "Australien" abgeleitet. Der britische Forschungsreisende Matthew Flinders (1774-1814) umsegelte als Erster den Kontinent und kartographierte die Küstenlinie. In seinen Publikationen führte er als Bezeichnung "Australien" ein.

Australisches Wappen (W1)
Das australische Wappen zeigt u.a. ein Känguruh und ein Emu (einen straußenähnlichen Laufvogel). Beide können nicht rückwärts laufen. Und diese Eigenschaft wollten sich die Australien ganz bewusst auf die Fahne - halt - auf das Wappen schreiben.
