John Searle's (1980a) thought experiment and associated (1984) derivation - is one of the best known and widely credited counters to claims of artificial intelligence (AI), i.e., to claims that computers do or at least can (someday might) think. According to Searle's original presentation, the argument is based on two truths: brains cause minds, and syntax doesn't suffice for semantics. Its target, Searle dubs "strong AI": "according to strong AI," according to Searle, "the computer is not merely a tool in the study of the mind, rather the appropriately programmed computer really is a mind in the sense that computers given the right programs can be literally said to understand and have other cognitive states" (1980a, p. 417). Searle contrasts "strong AI" to "weak AI". According to weak AI, according to Searle, computers just simulate thought, their seeming understanding isn't real (just as-if) understanding, their seeming calculation as-if calculation, etc.; nevertheless, computer simulation is useful for studying the mind (as for studying the weather and other things).

This spring (2005) we asked the Princeton University community to submit imagery produced in the course of research or incorporating tools and concepts from science. The response was overwhelming: more than 200 entries from nearly 100 individuals in 15 departments. We selected 55 of these works to appear in the 2005 Art of Science Exhibition.
The resulting assembly of images presents a fascinating and beautiful cross section of the arts and sciences at Princeton. It celebrates the aesthetics of research and the ways in which science and art inform each other.

Language Link was published four times per year from June 1999 to December 2003 by the ERIC Clearinghouse on Languages and Linguistics. Each issue covered topics of interest to the foreign language, English as a second language, linguistics, and cross cultural education fields.
Resource Guides Online include information on free relevant publications, Web sites, organizations of interest, and conferences. The guides also offer useful searches of the former ERIC database with information on ordering documents found therein.

The Louisiana State Museum Digital Library Jazz collection is composed of photographs, audio recordings and musical instruments from the collections of the Louisiana State Museum. Primarily dealing with traditional New Orleans jazz, the collections focus on photographs (including all of the Museum's images of Louis Armstrong) and audio recordings of musicians and bands that were primarily active in New Orleans, although many toured throughout the country and the world. The musical instruments span the makeup of a traditional New Orleans jazz band and include many examples from well-known musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Warren "Baby" Dodds, Bix Beiderbecke and others.

The purpose of the project "Piano Society" was to create a site which provides free quality recordings of piano music combined with the ability for pianists to promote themselves through biographies and by submitting recordings to the site. The aim was to become the largest site on Internet in the area which today is a fact! With 960 free piano recordings by 69 pianists playing music from 51 composers, this first goal is accomplished. A secondary goal, which almost comes naturally, was to create a meeting space for pianists from all parts of the world, provide articles, study guides, analyses etc.

The "Cornell University Library" and "The Cornell Daily Sun" are collaborating on an ambitious new digitization project to provide online access to the Sun's historical files. All of the original newspapers will be scanned and made available on a web site maintained by the Cornell University Library.
For more than 120 years, the Sun has provided news, information, and entertainment to the entire Cornell community. Accounts of campus events and activities, sports reporting, and editorial commentary all contribute to make the Sun one of the most important sources of information on the history of the university. Written and produced entirely by Cornell undergraduates, the Sun is also a rich resource for social and cultural historians - illuminating the perceptions and documenting the concerns of collegiate men and women from the late 19th-century and through the entire 20th century.
The contents of each issue also will be indexed and a database created so that alumni and other users will be able to search the entire Sun archive for articles by subject, writer, or date. For example, a former Sun reporter could find all the articles she wrote; a football player could find all stories that mentioned his name; and researchers, from historians to novelists, will be able to find documentation of campus, local and worldwide events and the opinions they generated among Cornellians of the period. The new web site will allow access to this vital resource, at any time and from anywhere an Internet connection is available.
