ARKive (W3)

"Noah's ark".

(E?)(L1) http://www.arkive.org/

(E?)(L?) http://www.arkive.org/about/

Mission
With species extinction now occurring at a faster rate than at any time in Earth's history, effective awareness raising and education programmes are ever more vital. Powerful wildlife imagery is an emotive and effective means of building environmental awareness and engagement, and quick and easy access to this imagery is essential in the digital mass communications society we live in today.

However, until now, this valuable imagery has been scattered throughout the world, in a wide variety of private, commercial and specialist collections, with no centralised collection, restricted public access, limited educational use, and no co-ordinated strategy for its long term preservation.

ARKive is now putting that right, gathering together the very best films and photographs of the world's species into one centralised digital library, to create a unique audio-visual record of life on Earth. Preserved and maintained for future generations, ARKive is making this key resource accessible to all, from scientists and conservationists to the general public and school children, via its award-winning website - www.arkive.org

ARKive is the Noah's Ark for the Internet era - a unique global initiative, gathering together films, photographs and audio recordings of the world's species into one centralised digital library for the benefit of today's and future generations.

About GVU

Under the auspices of the "United Nations University" ("UNU") the "Global Virtual University" ("GVU") is a consortium of universities that work together to enhance learning for environmental sustainability. Through a range of online study programmes and courses offered by partner universities, the mission of GVU is to increase people's sensitivity to and involvement in finding solutions for environment and development issues. The consortium acknowledges the importance of education for development and is particularly designed to meet the educational needs of the developing world.

Online learning (e-learning) forms the basic educational method for all our study programmes and courses. This implies that a substantial part of teaching, collaboration, and supervision take place on the Internet. The pedagogy has a social constructivist approach, which means that group work, online discussions and joint assignments are important. It further implies that an active and regular participation among the students is essential. Students meet their classmates in virtual classrooms, in some cases supported by a face to face session in the beginning of the course.

IUCN, IUCN Red List (W3)

"IUCN" steht für "International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources" - The World Conservation Union.

(E?)(L?) http://cms.iucn.org/

Founded on 5 October 1948 as the "International Union for the Protection of Nature" ("IUPN"), following on an international conference in Fontainebleau, France. The organization changed its name into "International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources" ("IUCN") in 1956. In 1990 it was shortened to "IUCN - The World Conservation Union".

(E?)(L?) http://cms.iucn.org/about/index.cfm

What is IUCN?
IUCN, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, helps the world find pragmatic solutions to our most pressing environment and development challenges. IUCN supports scientific research; manages field projects all over the world; and brings governments, non-government organizations, United Nations agencies, companies and local communities together to develop and implement policy, laws and best practice.

IUCN is the world’s oldest and largest global environmental network. IUCN is a democratic membership union with more than 1,000 government and NGO member organizations, and some 10,000 volunteer scientists in more than 160 countries.

IUCN’s work is supported by 1,100 professional staff in 62 offices and hundreds of partners in public, NGO and private sectors around the world. IUCN’s headquarters are located in Gland, near Geneva, in Switzerland.

IUCN’s vision and mission
Our vision is a just world that values and conserves nature.

Our mission is to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable.

MAB (W3)

(E?)(L?) http://www.unesco.de/mab_programm0.html?&L=0
