Fast jede Nachricht auf der Welt ist mit einem Punkt auf der Landkarte zu verbinden. Ein innovatives und kostenloses Tool hilft Journalisten und Redakteuren bei interaktiver Berichterstattung. Auf dem Portal von StepMap unter www.stepmap.de können Medienschaffende Landkarten anlegen und beliebig gestalten. Es ist weder ein Grafiker noch teure oder komplizierte Software nötig, innerhalb kürzester Zeit steht eine personalisierte Karte zur Verfügung. Aussehen, Hintergrund, geographische Ausgestaltung und Piktogramme auf der Karte sind frei wählbar. Punkte auf der Karte können zudem verknüpft werden mit Dokumenten, Bildern oder Videos. Über ein Widget können die Karten in andere Internetseiten eingebunden werden. Kurzbeschreibung
Anhand zahlreicher bedeutender Karten und Globen bietet der Band einen Überblick über Formen und Entwicklung der Kartographie von den ersten Zeugnissen um 1500 v. Chr. bis zu Satellitenbildern aus dem Jahr 2005. Jede Karte ist ausführlich erläutert - einerseits wird das Besondere der jeweiligen Karte beschrieben, andererseits wird sie in den historischen Kontext eingebettet. Daran schließen sich die unterschiedlichsten Fragen an: Welche Traditionen beeinflussen die Karte? Welchen Entwicklungsstand zeigt sie im Konzert anderer Karten der Zeit? Wer sind die »Kartenmacher« und welche Zwecke verfolgen sie? In der Gesamtschau entsteht so eine außergewöhnliche Geschichte der Kartographie, die bemerkenswerten Einzelbeispiele schärfen den Blick für Entwicklungen wie z. B. den formalen und funktionalen Wandel von Karten im Übergang vom Mittelalter zur Neuzeit. An ihnen lässt sich auch ablesen, wie sich das Wissen über die Welt verändert. 180 großformatige Karten illustrieren den Band, dazu gibt es zahlreiche kleine erläuternde Abbildungen zu den Textseiten.

Über den Autor
Peter Barber leitet seit 1987 die Kartenabteilung der British Library und gilt als Spezialist für die Geschichte der Kartographie, dazu zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen, u. a. »Tales from the Map Room«, Begleitband zu einer BBC-Serie zum Thema Karten, die Peter Barber auch als fachlicher Berater unterstützte. Die Beiträger sind durchgehend Fachleute in ihrem Feld.

Das vom TASCHEN Verlag komplett faksimilierte Exemplar in lateinischer Sprache entstammt der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek und hat mehrere Ausklapptafeln. Das handkolorierte Exemplar gehörte einst Prinz Eugen von Savoyen und ist in dieser besonderen Provenienz als einer der wenigen Ausgaben Gold-erhöht. Zitate und Reiseimpressionen großer Persönlichkeiten wie z.B. Benjamin Franklin ergänzen die historische und politische Bedeutung einzelner Karten.

Im Jahr 1665 vollendet, bildet Joan Blaeus außergewöhnlicher Atlas Maior den prachtvollsten und vollständigsten aller Atlanten des Barock. Mit der elfbändigen lateinischen Originalausgabe und ihren 536 Karten übertraf Blaeu seinen eifrigen Konkurrenten, den Kartographen Johannes Janssonius, dessen Rivalität Blaeu zu einer Prachtausgabe des bisher größten und vollständigsten Atlanten inspirierte. Die Arktis, Europa, Afrika, Asien und Amerika darstellend, verkörpert Blaeus Atlas Maior eine beachtliche Leistung und ist bis heute eines der prächtigsten Beispiele in der Geschichte der Kartographie.

Peter van der Krogt, der führende Experte auf dem Gebiet niederländischer Atlanten, wirkt am Explokart-Forschungsprogramm über die Geschichte der Kartografie an der Geowissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Utrecht mit. Seit 1990 arbeitet er am Projekt Koemans Atlantes Neerlandici, einer Kartobibliografie von in den Niederlanden herausgegebenen Atlanten. Sein zweiter Schwerpunkt (in Zusammenarbeit mit der Universität Nijmegen) ist die Zusammenstellung eines illustrierten und kommentierten Katalogs des Atlas Blaeu-Van der Hem der wichtige mehrbändige Atlas, der in der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek aufbewahrt wird und 2004 in das Unesco-Register "Gedächtnis der Menschheit" aufgenommen wurde.

Wir freuen uns, hiermit die Buch-Version unserer bekannten Faltkarten-Reihe zum "Atlas der Wahren Namen" vorstellen zu können.

Inhaltlich sind hier auf 24 Kartenseiten alle Namen der Deutschland-, Europa- und Weltausgabe auf großen Karten in gut lesbarer Schrift vereint. Hinzu kommen die bisher nicht erfassten Gebiete aller US-Staaten und der kanadischen Provinzen. Wo liegen eigentlich die Inseln des Glücks? Finden Sie es selbst heraus mit dem "Atlas der Wahren Namen"! Im "Atlas der Wahren Namen" werden geographische Namen in die deutsche Sprache übersetzt, d.h. deren wahre (etymologische) Bedeutung wird anstelle des allgemein bekannten Namens in die Karte eingetragen.

Beispiel: Statt "Sahara" steht in der Karte "Sandmeer", zu arabisch "es-sahra" = "Wüste", "Sandmeer".

1500 übersetzte Namen von Städten, Ländern, Gewässern und Landschaften sind in beiden Karten auf einen Blick zu sehen. Dadurch wird dem Betrachter eine ungewohnte Perspektive geboten auf bekannte Formen und Umrisse von geographischen Elementen. Die leichte Verständlichkeit aller in die deutsche Sprache Übersetzter Namen weckt Assoziationen zu den Karten des mythischen Kontinentes Mittelerde aus dem Herrn der Ringe. Der Leser wird mit einem Augenzwinkern in eine unbekannte und dennoch vertraute Welt eingeladen. Mit Hilfe des umfangreichen Namensregisters auf der Kartenrückseite lassen sich alle Übersetzungen leicht nachvollziehen.

Geographische Namen entstanden in erster Linie aus Beobachtungen der naturräumlichen Gegebenheiten, die durch die Lage der Siedlungsorte, das Fließverhalten der lebenswichtigen Flüsse oder Vegetationsgrundlagen gepägt wurden.
In zweiter Linie waren es individuelle Charaktere von Völkern, aus denen Namen von Ländern und Landschaften entstanden.
Auch mythologische Aspekte und die Beherrscher der jeweiligen Gebiete sind in Namensgebungen vertreten.
